Riding on forest roads: five things to check before you ride
A good ride starts in the stable. A short checklist to help you ride safely and calmly in the forest.

A forest road is one of the nicest places for horse and rider, but it is still worth checking a few things before setting off.
1. Helmet and proper footwear
A helmet belongs to every ride, even a short one. Boots with a heel keep the foot from sliding through the stirrup.
2. Tack in good order
Check the saddle, girth and bridle. A worn strap or loose stitching is easier to spot in the stable than in the forest.
3. How the horse feels
Before riding, see whether the horse moves evenly and whether the legs and hooves are in good shape.
4. Tell someone your route
Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. Take a charged phone with you.
5. Weather and visibility
In autumn and winter it gets dark early. A hi-vis vest and reflectors on the horse make you visible even on a forest road.
